Welcome back to the last stretch of school for the 2013-2014 academic year. First marking period grades are posted on Jupiter. Your grade reports will be handed out this week. HW 2.2.1 will be handed out this week.
The first marking period is over, and, as always, I want to commend everyone for working hard to meet project deadlines. Grades will be issued after the Spring break, which, I hope, will be rejuvenating for everyone.
We started the semester with a series of classic exercises in drawing from observation, which explored use of line, and analysis of form. We then took a sharp turn into Modernism, by using Cubist principles to fragment and recombine these drawings, ultimately developing a dense puzzle-like design of interlocking shapes. The relationship between spatial illusion and flatness informed our conversations about this process. We put aside drawing to look at color and paint. First up: brush handing. Then we considered the color wheel and basic color analogous and complementary color relationships through a color study scale painting. We also talked about basic color properties of hue, intensity, value and temperature. Students then transferred their cubist "puzzle" compositions to a canvas, and created a palette exploring these properties based upon the pair of complementary colors from the color swatch paintings to paint their designs. These intricate gem-like paintings were completed for the end of the first marking period. For the first few weeks of our second marking period, we are learning about modifying color through painting techniques of glazing and alla prima impasto. The students are learning to re-introduce a sense of spatial illusion through the use of color vale and intensity contrast. The fun part will be deciding what these images are going to become. I doubt that there is anyone who isn't itching for it to get warmer after this long and arduous winter. We're going to apply some heat in the classroom as we examine the color wheel and learn how to mix colors.
Interim progress reports based on the drawing we have been doing for the last several weeks were handed out this past week. The averages will be posted on Jupiter this week. I hope that parents will come and check out student work during parent-teacher conferences at the end of March. |
