Semester Writing Projects
Each semester you are required to write a research paper about some aspect of the Visual Arts.
During the Fall Semester, I ask you to take an independent trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. You will be given an assignment, and a worksheet to bring with you on this trip. Your job is to select, observe and research an individual piece of art in the Met's collection.
The Fall MET writing project has been introduced as of the first week of November. Students may obtain a copy of the assignment from Ms de Bethune when they are ready to go to the MET, or they may
Students should be sure to sign up for a curatorial department before they go to the MET, and pick up the writing project packet, which includes the MET writing project assignment, the worksheet (to be filled out at the museum), a sheet of drawing paper, and the MET teen pass (download MET Museum teen pass PDF.) Proof of visit: Save yourr dated MET admissions sticker, and attach it to your papers OR take a selfie with the object that is the subject of your papers and attach it to your papers. Papers without proof of visit will not be credited.
The project is due on 1/6/20 in the Art Room. It will be marked down 5 points per day that it is later, and I will not accept it after 1/17/20.

Artists
For the Spring Semester, you are being asked to research and compare two artists, and discuss them in the context of Modernism.This project has two parts. 1.) Selecting and researching the work of your two chosen artists, and comparing them. 3.) After describing and discussing each artist's work, and comparing them, you will engage in an imaginative exercise that synthesizes the ideas of each artist's work into a design for a public work of art to be installed on the Lehman College Campus.
Due by June10, 2019 (Late papers will be accepted until June 17, but will loose 5pts per day that they are late. I will NOT accept them for credit after June 17.) Please put your name on everything!!!!!

When you hand in this paper, it should include:
I. Your paper with typed answers, in outline form, with complete sentences and paragraphs, to all the questions asked.
It should be @ 4 pages (55) + bibliography (minimum of 5 references, not using Wikipedia) (7), including 4 reproductions (8), 2 per artist, of typical work (70). Please make a big effort to follow the outline when you write.
II. Your plan for a public artwork at Lehman College that synthesizes the ideas and work of these two artists. Should include a brief description (7), 2 drawings (20) and a copy of the Lehman Map (3) showing the location of the installation. (30)
Points off: 10 points deducted for work not typed.

Please note that, as part of the background research for this paper, you are required to read the attached file of excepts from Janson's History of Art. These are the introductory summaries of each of the last six chapters in this authoritative art history textbook.
