We're beginning the second half of the school year with an extended drawing unit. The first several lessons will last for one class only, but all the drawing will culminate in an extended drawing that is worked on for a few classes. Then we will move onto color and paint!
Students are going on a field trip to the Whitney next Wednesday, March 2. Please get you permission slips in! You can download a PDF of the form under the field trip heading of this menu. Mr. Kevin Saw, who is HSAS's librarian at the Lehman College Library is coming into classes this week to discuss using the college library's databases, and to make sure that everyone has their library accounts registered and activated. Please make sure to have your parents fill out the forms and to return them. You will need to sue the library for our next semester research project. Everyone is working very hard to make their folders that "rich visual experience." Students have til friday, October 16, to finish. The folder grade will be the bulk of the interim average assessment. This coming week, most students have Art only for their 2nd class of the week, and we will do worksheet activities related to the "Elements and Principles" lecture that we saw this week.
Next week, HW 1.1.2, the "bust" assignment will be handed out. Look for Interim averages to be posted on Jupiter grades at some point during the following week. Students will also receive a written report in class. I have to apologize for being so confused about the September calendar. HW 1.1.1, which is your contract, is due by September 25 (Friday) at 2pm, in the art room. It may be downloaded as a PDF from the homework page of this website. I will accept it after the 25th, but it will loose 10 points per week that it is late.
Welcome to all my new studio artists for the year. This September is more "swiss-cheesy" than usual, but everyone should have a contract by now, and by the end of this week every one should have started his or her folder.
We will be in full creative swing in no time! Just an FYI, as you explore this website. Please look at the art gallery to see the amazing work of students in previous classes. Please note that your artwork can only be posted if you have turned in a media waiver. At the halfway mark for the last marking period, Juniors are almost done with APS, and well into our painting project. Everyone should into glazing by now, and ready, in a class or two, to start the ala prima stage. I am looking forward to seeing how you make these images truly your own.
This week I am handing out the 2nd semester writing project. It is also posted here under Semester writing projects. It is due by June 10th, which is the last day of classes Walkways homework is due by this friday. Homework 2.2.2, the yearbook survey, is handed out this week. It is also due by June 10. We are entering the home stretch of the school year. While everyone's schedules will be busy with AP exams, in the art room we will be focusing on further explorations with color, and how to get paint to be expressive. Home work 2.2.1, Lehman College Walkway, has just been handed out. The 2nd semester writing project will be handed out during the week of May 11-15.
Thank you to all my juniors, and the chaperones, for a terrific trip to MoMA last week. Thursday is the last day of the first marking period, and all three cubist trace drawings, plus the combined drawing are due. It is also the last day to make up any missing color swatch/brush stroke painting work. Please ensure to and in all revised work, and to make sure that i have your "small still life" drawings.
I doubt that anyone can pretend that it's warm enough outside, but the fact that Spring is around the corner is a consolation. In the meantime, we are commencing our drawing unit in the Art room. Three weeks of various drawing assignments working on learning home to observe, analyze and draw what you see. This week is our introduction to the still-life with gesture and contour drawings.
Remember that the altered book projects must be finished by March 6th for the interim grade report, and that HW 2.1.1 is due that week as well. We have reached the first week of the second semester, and everyone is getting back to work after the break for finals, regents, and grading. Grading material and comments for students' first marking period grades are being distributed in class this week, and 1st semester grades have been posted on jupiter. Please note that they are not quarter grades, but your semester grade.
We are concluding our altered book project between now and the February break. Students were required to have finished altering the pages, and to have added some text and some color for last marking period. This marking period, students need to add an additional three dimensional paper structure, alter the color in some fashion, and finish adding text and color. Think about how you can tie all the elements in your book together thematically; you will be asked to title it. Upcoming: next week, homework 2.1.1 will be handed out. On April 16th, we will take a junior class field trip to the Museum of Modern Art. |
